Today’s prompt is a tough one as I don’t really have one. LInda G. Hill confronts us with the following prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday:
Your Friday prompt for Stream of Consciousness Saturday is “least-favorite word.” Use your least-favorite word in your post. If you can’t decide on one, use a word that just really bugs you. Enjoy!
I like words, some are fun to say, some are impossible to say (maybe that’s just me), some are just functional.
I suppose that the first word that popped into my head was “moist,” which seems to be a word just about every woman I’ve ever met seems to hate. For giggles, just use the word “moist” in a sentence around a chick — it doesn’t even need to be an innuendo — and there’s usually a cringe/shudder. Throw in that innuendo . . . Mwah! Just don’t be a dick and only do it around friends, otherwise you’re being creepy, not intentionally annoying.
Not entirely sure why. Well, heehee, I know why but that can refer to acts of perversion so profound and disgusting that decorum prohibits listing them here.
It’s a perfectly fine word, and better than “kinda wet.” Anyway.
Moist.
Wracking my brain for a word and I have a least-favorite sound. The sound of a living creature in pain is my least-favorite sound. A dog’s whimper, a baby crying in pain, a soft sob or moan; I could go the rest of my life not hearing those.
Hmmmm, maybe “can’t” or “try” are becoming words that I despise, at least in certain context. As I get older, Yoda had it right. There is no try. There is do or do not.
I’ve been making an effort to remove both words from my vocabulary as I develop a more positive mindset and get some of the “why would folks read this newsletter” or “do you really think you know what you’re doing with this marketing stuff” voices out of my head.
Can’t and try can put you in a mental straightjacket if you let them. You are what you think and if you think you can’t, you can’t. And if “try” is all you’re ever going to do; that’s all you’re ever going to be if you’re trying to reach a goal.
There’s an entire world of difference in saying “I’m going to try to lose weight” and “I’m going to lose weight.” One’s a wish and useless hope. The other is a statement. You might fall along the way, but as long as you keep getting back up, you’ll get there in the end.
I suppose there’s a bit of nuance — I could say that I’m going to become a famous singer, but given that my voice sounds like hoarse drunk frogs being slowly strangled while drowning, that’s not really going to happen. And at 5’6″ and slow, my youthful dreams of being in the NFL . . . yeah, no. We all have some natural limitations and are better at some things than others, so, you know “try” to be hopeful but realistic. or something like that.
Also, be the Little Engine that Could. One of my favorite books as a kid. There’s a powerful lesson in “I think I can, I think I can.” while trudging up your own personal mountain carryng toys and candy to the children in town [a white panel van would totally have change the vibe of this story] .
That also reminds me of a book I randomly picked up off of one of my bookshelves yesterday. Mastery of Love (The Four Agreements, which I need to find where the fuck I put it and read again, also excellent) is a book I would have dismissed as . . . stupid? Silly? Floofy? New age bullshit? years ago. I’ve only started it, but the quote here crystalized for me a bunch of shit been floating around in my head the last few years.
You have the power to create. Your power is so strong that whatever you believe comes true. You create yourself, whatever you believe you are. You are the way you are bcause that is what you believe about yourself.
The Mastery of Love by Don Miguel Ruiz
The soundtrack for today’s installment has been most Little Big Town. Two of my favs, the first of which I might do later today.
Love the vocal on this song. Just epitomizes longing for me.
“Ruuu-dy, Ruuu-dy, Ruuu-dy!”

When you mentioned ‘moist,’ I immediately thought of The Outer Limits episode “Demon with a Glass Hand” – one of the best OL episodes. https://www.dailymotion.com/video/x6qkl5p – Anyway, there’s a scene in which ‘moist’ is important.
Can’t and try are good words to remove from your vocabulary. Good job!

I’ve never watched any of the Outer Limits, a little before my time and I’ve always been more of a D&D type nerd 🙂
I did watch one episode of Black Mirron, which I want to say people have compaired to The Outer Limits. It was . . . different. LOVE the animated sci-fi shorts of Love Death Robots on Netflix.

I think you would appreciate the Outer Limits. Back when shows relied on good storytelling to keep it interesting. Simple effects, camera angles, lighting and acting was all they had.

I did start watching the episode, then remembered I have a short freelance piece due at 4 🙂 Hell, I’m still wanted to watch a Marxx Brothers movie because of you . . . one of these days I’ll get around to Duck Soup.

“Try” has to be one of my favourite words to edit out of my clients’ books. 😀 Good one!
Honestly, I don’t mind Moist. They’re actually a good band. 😉

Well hello. Nice to meet a fellow optimist, at least about the will to accomplish. Our mutual friend, Dan of No Facilities suggested I drop by. I am from Louisiana and my least favorite word for this prompt is ‘can’t’ and I loved the Little Engine that Could as a child. I just read it to my youngest grandson before bedtime. As far as Don Miguel Ruiz, his books helped me reach a new level of self awareness that brought peace and comfort. In The Mastery of Love, my favorite analogy was that of our willingness to trade or do anything in exchange for love, when love is ours always unconditionally. The Four Agreements is enlightening too. My favorite agreement is Never Take Anything Personally. Anyway, great post and in the immortal words of Dory-“Just keep swimming…” 😉

Thank you. I read yours as well and it was like a better-writter mirror. Working on reading and re-reading the Ruiz books.
Always swimming, even when sometimes it feels like drowning 🙂
